The term Biography comes from the ancient Greek βίος “life” + γράφω “I write” which translates as “life scripture” - a description of a person’s life made by other people or by himself (autobiography).

A biography includes not only the basic facts of life, such as education, work, family relationships, and death; it also depicts a person’s experience during events. Unlike a profile or an autobiography (resume), a biography presents the life story of the subject and highlights various aspects of their life, including intimate details, and may include an analysis of the personality of the subject.

Biographical works are usually non-fiction, but fiction can also be used to portray a person’s life. It is found in various media, from literature to cinema, and forms a genre known as biography.

Biographies are a source of primary sociological information that allow you to determine the psychological type of personality in its historical, national and social context.

Biographies recreate the history of a person in connection with social reality, culture and life of their era. A biography can be scientific, artistic, popular, etc.

Memoirs are an integral part of a biography. Through them we learn what events this person participated in and wrote about later from memory. The word memoirs comes from the French mémoires - contemporary notes about events in which the author of the notes participated or which are known to him from eyewitnesses, and about people with whom the author was familiar. An important feature of the memoirs is its claim to the authenticity of the recreated past and, accordingly, to the documentary nature of the text, although in reality not all memoirs are true and accurate.

Memoirs are not identical to an autobiography and a chronicle of events, although in everyday life these concepts can be used as synonyms. The memoirist tries to comprehend the historical context of his own life and describes his actions as part of the general historical process. In the autobiography (for example, “Confession of the smoker of opium”, “Confession” of Rousseau), the emphasis is on the inner life of the author and on the development of his personality. The memoirs differ from the chronicles of modern events in subjectivity - in that the events described are refracted through the prism of the author’s consciousness with their sympathies and dispositions, with their aspirations and views.
