Welcome to the Indonesia category of Trieste Books. Indonesia is a huge archipelago of various islands scattered on both sides of the equator between the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The most famous landmarks are located on the islands of Bali and Java. Indonesia, with a vast amount of green forests on all islands and halfway between the poles, has been nicknamed the Equator Emerald. This fabulous country has a very rich and long history. The arrival of European colonialists in Indonesia, which began in the 16th century, was caused by the high demand for spices and herbs that grew in the eastern part of the Malay Archipelago. The Portuguese were the first to settle here: in 1512, the navigator Francisco Serrão managed to establish a supply of spices from Moluccas and stay with part of the crew on the island of Ternate. In the 17th century, other European powers joined the struggle for control of the local spice trade, the Netherlands being the most active among them. For several decades the Dutch managed to drive out competitors from the archipelago - the Portuguese managed to keep the eastern part of the island of Timor. People come here to see active volcanoes, rare flora and fauna. Unforgettable Indonesia is the quintessence of exoticism: the pristine nature of Bali and the black sand beaches of Sumatra, the palaces and batik of Java and the rainforests of Kalimantan. Interesting sights can be visited on the largest islands. On the island of Java there is the Borobudur Buddhist temple complex, built in the 9th century and decorated with 504 statues of Buddha. Travelers will love the Prambanan Temple, Mount Semeru and the heavenly Pangandaran Green Canyon. Interesting places in Bali for travelers will complement the impression of the culture of Indonesia: the Millennial Besakih Temple at an altitude of one thousand yards, the Tanah Lot with unusual legends and tales, the Puri-Saren Palace. A successful trip to Indonesia is a complex of unique historical monuments, unforgettable architecture, and amazing nature. There is everything for an interesting and bright holiday at any time of the year.
