Welcome to the India category of Trieste Books. India is rightfully one of the most amazing countries in South Asia. This country is the cradle of one of the most ancient civilizations, the birthplace of Hinduism and Buddhism, and today it ranks second on the planet in terms of population and continues to attract travelers eager for incredible discoveries. India is sacred and mysterious, unlike any other country in the world. India is like а firework of aromas and colors, a kaleidoscope of traditions, sometimes shocking for foreigners, but remaining untouchable for Hindus from time immemorial. India is a country of contrasts, where ancient temples and majestic palaces and other ceremonial sights coexist with shacks and noisy bazaars. Let there be no wealth, but there is life. In addition to everything else, India possesses magnificent landscapes: jungle, mountain peaks, and beaches - the local nature is generous with beauty. People come to India for enlightenment: after the hustle and bustle of the West, having received enlightenment, you begin to look at the world with different eyes. The Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama’s discovery of a new sea route from Europe to India marked the beginning of direct Indo-European trade. The Portuguese established trading colonies in Goa, Daman, Diu and Bombay, and were followed by the Dutch, Danes and British, who in 1619 established a trading post in the port city of Surat on the west coast. Then came the French. Internal conflicts between the Indian kingdoms allowed European traders to gradually establish political influence and acquire territories. Despite the fact that the European powers managed to keep many Indian regions under their control during the 18th century, they were later forced to cede almost all of these territories to the British, with the exception of the French outposts of Pondicherry and Chandernagore, the Dutch port city of Coromandel, and the Portuguese colonies of Goa, Daman and Diu.
