A civil war in the United States. Trieste Publishing offers books on this topic to its readers.

The crisis in American society and state began as a dispute over the fate of slavery in the new territories annexed to the United States after the Mexican War, and escalated after the victory of the Republican (anti-slavery) party candidate Abraham Lincoln in the presidential election. Soon after that, secession began - the process of the southern states leaving the Union and forming a new state by them - the Confederate States of America. The federal government rejected the constitutional doctrine that allowed states to leave the United States, leading to the outbreak of the Civil War. The issue of slavery became central to the conflict. In the midst of the war, President Lincoln abolished slavery in the breakaway states, and two years later, Congress passed the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, outlawing it throughout the state. In 1868, the 14th Amendment granted citizenship to all residents of the country. The victory of the North in the war kicked off the Reconstruction of the South, a federal government effort to end slavery and provide civil rights to African Americans. The reconstruction was accompanied by corruption, and after its completion, when federal troops were withdrawn from the southern states and they were accepted into the Union on a full-fledged basis, the old white elite came to power in them again. In the South, the "Jim Crow Laws" began to be passed, introducing segregation of blacks. Nevertheless, the main goal of the Civil War was achieved: slavery was abolished, and an understanding was enshrined in the Constitution that did not imply the right of states to secede from the Union.
