About the Book
VICTOR EMMANUEL CHAPMAN, a member of the Franco-American Air Corps, was killed in Verdun on June 23, 1916, and hit the rear of the German forces. He was twenty-seventh; was born in New York, studied at Fay School for two years, studied at St. Paul's School in Concord for several years, lived abroad for a year in France and Germany. Upon his return, he spent a year at the Stone School in Boston and then went to Harvard, graduating in 1913; immediately after leaving school, he went to Paris and for a year studying architecture at M. Gromort's studio, preparing to enter the fine arts. This made him a student of fine arts, since the ateliers are part of the school, and in 1914 he joined the Foreign Legion... Books about the History of France describe its history from the time of the Gauls, who were incorporated into the Roman Empire, as France endured the Hundred Years' War and in the 16th century achieved a far-flung colonial empire. World War 1 was devastating for France, which was invaded by Nazi Germany in World War 2. Titles include: History of France, Louis the Fourteenth, Women of Versailles, The last years of Louis XV, Napoleon, the last phase, Napoleon III at the Height of His Power, The intendant as a political agent under Louis XIV, France and the French in the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century, Die Kolonialfrage im Frieden von Versailles, Contemporary American Opinion of the French Revolution, and A History of the Third French Republic.
