The Record Interpreter: A Collection of Abbreviations, Latin Words and Names Used in English Historical Manuscripts and Records

The Record Interpreter – is a collection of abbreviations, Latin words and names used in English historical manuscripts and records which was published in 1892 and complied by Charles Trice Martin, B.A., F.S.A., Assistant-Keeper of the Public Records. This volume is in fact an extension of the Appendix to the ninth edition of Court Hand Restored, by Wright, which the author issued in 1879, with the addition of a list of abbreviated forms of French and Latin words used in English records and manuscripts. The latter, however, being only a part of the preface to a historical book, is not as well known and not so convenient to use as if it happened in a book devoted to information of this class. The author also tried to justify printing another such list by arranging the abbreviations in such a way as to facilitate the search for the desired word. In some lists, this is not easy if you do not know what the word is completely. The following principle worked: letters with abbreviation signs attached to them, represented by one font, are separated from the same letters printed in the usual way. Thus, the order is a letter followed by a letter; a letter followed by a sign; letter with the attached sign.
