Gospel of Buddha: According to the Old Records, was the most influential work of Paul Carus. In addition to numerous English editions, since this 1894 edition, the book has been translated into Japanese, German, French, Hebrew, Spanish, Chinese, Polish, Telugu, and Hindi. This volume is not intended to address historical issues. The compiler has studied his subject as well as he could under the circumstances, but he does not intend to offer scientific output here. Nor is this book an attempt to popularize Buddhist religious scriptures or present them in poetic form. If this Gospel of the Buddha helps people to better understand Buddhism, and if in its simple style it impresses the reader with the poetic grandeur of the Buddha's personality, these effects should be considered accidental; its main purpose lies even deeper. This book is written to make the reader think about the religious issues of our time. He represents the image of a religious leader of the distant past in order to make him influence the living present and become a factor in shaping the future.
