Book description
This book, published in 1909, is Stefan George's translation of William Shakespeare's Sonnets into German.
Stefan George was a German symbolist and neo-romantic poet, publisher and translator.
George's poetry is characterized by aristocracy and remoteness from the world.
The themes of heroism and self-sacrifice made George popular in National Socialist circles, although the poet himself did not participate in politics.
Through his circle of admirers, he influenced several writers, in particular Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
He translated into German Dante, Baudelaire, Shakespeare, as in this edition, and contemporary poets.
