Book description

Primary instruction in relation to education: Addressed to teachers in training – is a fourth edition of this book which was published in 1890 and written by S. S. Laurie. Prof Simon Somerville Laurie FRSE LLD was a 19th century Scottish educator. In 1876, Laurie became Bell Professor of Education at the University of Edinburgh. He also campaigned vigorously and successfully for Better Teacher Training in Scotland. This small book was written to show the Primary School Teacher that the purpose of primary school is ethical: and, moreover, that the very constraints in which he works can help to achieve this goal. The purpose of this book is to reconcile the school teacher with his work, which, despite its limited range, is predominantly intellectual and moral. He is on the verge of admitting through the indefinite border separating "occupation" from "profession"; but it is in vain for him to assume that he will ever be able to achieve professional recognition in any other way than through the educational point of view of his daily task and to carry it out in a professional spirit.
