Book description
Passages From The French And Italian Note-Books Of Nathaniel Hawthorne - this is the first volume of Hawthorne's collection of notes and observations on his travels to France and Italy.
The author collected information about French and Italian culture, but he also recorded personal thoughts that were not intended for publication.
Here the daily experience of his Italian stay and the silent life of painting and sculpture in the form in which it should have been examined by his eye, are presented exactly as they appeared to him at that time.
He saw very little about France, and therefore the bulk of these magazines are devoted to Italy, where he remained from late January 1858 to mid-May 1859.
The French and Italian Notebooks were rewritten for publication by Mrs. Hawthorne in London in the winter of 1870-71 and appeared the following fall after her death.
They end the series of Hawthorne's diaries; for upon his return to America, the civil war so engulfed his thoughts that he could not continue such memoranda.
