Book description

Kinse Shiriaku – is a book about Japan history, which was published in 1876 and translated from Japanese to English by Sir Ernest Mason Satow. Sir Ernest Mason Satow was a British scientist, diplomat, traveler, botanist, co-author of dictionaries and Japanologist. In Japan, he was a key figure in British-Japanese relations in the Bakumatsu and Meiji eras, he is known more than in his homeland. He is the author of the well-known and relevant even today book on diplomatic art A Guide to Diplomatic Practice, which was repeatedly reprinted and supplemented by prominent diplomats. This compilation begins with the arrival of an American squadron in 1853 and ends with the capture of Hakodate in 1869. The author has found slight discrepancies in the various accounts of this period which he has seen, and has endeavored to arrive at the truth by consulting them impartially.
