About the Book
After the publication of volume One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature and the introduction of George E. Woodberry, the books themselves were collected from the collections of the Club members for an exhibition at the Clubhouse. All of these volumes belonged to the first published editions, except in cases where copies of the earliest editions were not available or for some reason undesirable. In two cases, in Tottel's Collection and Evfus Lily, copies of the first editions are unique and, therefore, practically inaccessible. The second edition of Mirrors for Magistrates contains the first edition of a poem by the Earl of Dorset called Induction, and therefore was the edition we wanted to show. Despite the often-repeated claim that copies of the second edition of Essays on Bacon are rarer than copies of the first edition, no copies of the first edition were received, and one of the later dates was necessarily included in the collection. On one or two occasions the second issue of the first issue was used, when the extremely rare first issue did not belong to a member of the Club. Situated side by side, each volume opens on its own title page, the individuality of these well-known works was strikingly revealed: taken together, they clearly and interestingly illustrated the development of the Book in England. Thus, the members of the Club were forced to propose the publication of a second or additional volume, which should contain bibliographic facts related to each book, and which briefly indicated some aspects of this development. This volume has been prepared in response to this proposal.
