A Maker Of New Japan Rev. Joseph Hardy Neesima – is a book which was published in 1894 and written by J. D. Davis, Professor of Theology in Doshisha University. Joseph Hardy Neesima was a Japanese Protestant missionary and educator in the Meiji era. He was the founder of the Doshisha English School, which later became Doshisha University. He was married to Yamamoto Yaeko, a former soldier and nurse who served in the Boshin War, the Sino-Japanese War, and the Russo-Japanese War. She also later founded the Doshisha Girls' School. In preparing this essay, Davis referred to the diary of Dr. Neesima, written before he left his home for Hakodate, during his journey there and in Hakodate, up to the day he set sail from there in his great search for truth, and also a copy of a short sketch of his life by the late Miss Phebe Fuller McKeen, one of his Sabbath School teachers; this sketch was written after Dr. Neesima studied at Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass. about a year. The author quoted freely from the latter in the first chapter and at the beginning of the second, using Dr. Neesima's own words in broken English, which he wrote down or which his teacher mentioned above had copied during his trip before he had the opportunity to learn English. Davis also quoted from his diary, written during his trip 1884-1885 around the world. The author also freely quoted letters here and spoke in some detail about the history of the founding of the Doshisha schools, about the great life work of Dr. Neesima.
