Book description

This small book has been written with the hope of encouraging the study of science in the classrooms of the Education Workers' Association. Despite some brilliant advances, science has not received the attention it deserves. Science is a characteristic product of modern thought in the field of pure learning. The author's goal was to explain what are the goals and objectives of science and what satisfaction can be obtained as a result of its study. The author has tried to draw attention to those aspects of his more complex departments that can be expected to appeal to men and women with broad intellectual sympathies. The book does not claim to be "popular" or to be easily read in an hour; Whereas all experience shows that simple thinking difficulties are not an obstacle to success in adult education; a leader's enthusiasm is all that is needed to maintain interest. No writer can hope to be as close to his readers as the speaker to his audience, and unless there are leaders who treat science in the spirit suggested, the author's efforts will surely fail. But perhaps his efforts will help those who would not otherwise have undertaken this task. Since the author has no other purpose than to lead readers to the systematic study of any special branch of science, and he does not want them to limit their attention to the general provisions that this book is devoted to, no reference is made to more detailed works covering this topic. But perhaps it should be noted that the subjects under discussion, although related to science, are not part of it; and that, accordingly, there is much more difference of opinion about some of them than about more strictly scientific subjects. Since the goal of the author is to arouse interest, not convey information, he did not hesitate at times to assert dogmatically what others, equally qualified to judge, categorically denied.
