INTRODUCTORY NOTE
INTRODUCTORY NOTE CIESA DE LEON, in addition to his two chronicles (translations of which are already included in the first series of volumes of the Hacklewith Society), completed the history of conquests and civil wars in Peru. Not all the manuscripts were found, but Jimenez de la Espada edited and published the first part of Ciesa's de Leon's "War for Quito" in 1880. This is valuable because Cieza was the most reliable of all the old Peruvian writers and because he was there and knew many of the actors in the scenes he describes. Cieza is always honest and impartial. Interest in this renewed work of Ciesa is that it recorded an attempt by the Spanish government at the request of Las Casas to make friends with the Indians, applying the laws to protect them. We will see that the soldier sent by the viceroy to carry out public policy was a hopelessly impossible man. Inca Marco pinned his hopes on the news of the governor's arrival with the New Laws and died in full anticipation that better things would begin for his people. Ciesa's story is well told and full of interest. But he comes to an end just before the assassination of Viceroy Factor Lancer Suarez de Carbajal, which was the immediate cause of his overthrow. Therefore, a letter from Bishop Cusco to Charles V, which describes the assassination and subsequent events, is added to Cieza's report in this volume. The letter is followed by the indictment of the judges against the viceroy, which also describes their version of the murder and what followed these events...
