Book description
The rise and progress of Sunday schools; a biography of Robert Raikes and William Fox - is a work which was published in 1863 and written by John Carroll Power, an American historian.
The first chapter provides a summary of the efforts to establish Sunday schools prior to the time of Robert Raikes.
The second chapter is devoted to sketches of the life of Robert Raikes before he published his first notes on his schools.
The third chapter depicts the life of William Fox until the moment when he first met Robert Raikes' notification of his schools and began a correspondence with him; and then use this correspondence with other materials for a double purpose: to supplement their biography and turn it into the History of Sunday Schools, and after their death to devote another chapter to each of them, and then complete, bringing the History to the end of their lives.
The extensive correspondence that the author has used may be somewhat tedious, but the author felt that the most accurate account of the Sunday schools could be given in the language of those who were the most prominent figures in this History.
The history of the labor of the two most noble sons of England in organizing an institution that has already brought innumerable benefits to both countries, England and America, and is called to bless the Church and through her the whole world to the end of time.
