PREFACE

Many of the earliest voyages to Spanish possessions in South America can be accused of being more on pirate principles than on those that were supposed to guide peoples in their communication with each other. Even Sir Francis Drake was humiliated when he returned, considering him little better than a pirate, and it took all the accolades bestowed on him by Queen Elizabeth to make him right in public opinion. This is not an appropriate place to discuss whether England was justified in allowing such expeditions to leave their shores; it is enough to state that our author is not responsible for any bias, as his journey was undertaken with the permission of the Queen's Commission; and his behavior was marked by humanity and goodwill. We can hardly appreciate the daring of these early sailors; but although we give them credit for their attempts to make such long voyages into almost unexplored seas on ships of light load, we must not think that they were completely unsupported in the nature of the expected service: on the contrary, it seems that they were very careful, taken into account as in the selection the correct crews, and in providing them with everything they need...
