Book description
The Maccabees and the Church – is two sermons, preached before the University of Cambridge in 1871 by Christopher Wordsworth.
He was British Anglican religious leader, bishop, better known as a spiritual and scientific writer of 19th century.
The Maccabees - is a group of Jewish rebel warriors.
They took control of Judea, which was part of the Seleucid Empire at the time.
The Maccabees re-established the Jewish religion. Also they partly, through violent conversion, expanded the borders of Judea through conquest, and diminished the influence of Hellenistic Judaism and Hellenism.
These two lectures are devoted to the history of the Maccabees, considered in relation to the current condition and perspective of the church.
