About the Book

In presenting to the public a new edition of Mr. Thomas Taylor's excellent treatise on the Eleusinian and Bacchic Mysteries, it is appropriate to insert a few words of explanation. These rites once represented the spiritual life of Greece and for two thousand years or more were considered the designated means of rebirth through inner union with the Divine Essence. However absurd or even offensive they may seem to us, we must hesitate long before we decide to lay desecrating hands on what others hold sacred. We can learn a valuable lesson in this regard from the Greek and Roman writers who learned to treat popular religious practices with gaiety, but who always treated the Eleusinian mysteries with the deepest reverence.
