Book description
This is the first copy of Rudyard Kipling's collection of tales published in 1896.
This edition is illustrated with twenty one full page black and white illustrations.
This collection consists of seven tales such as: With the Main Guard; The Drums of the Fore and Aft; The Man who was; The Courting of Dinah Shadd; The Incarnation of Krishna Mulvaney; The Taking of Lungtungpen; The Madness of Private Ortheris.
“The Drums of the Fore and Aft” concerns an inexperienced regular battalion serving overseas as part of the Highland Brigade and the Gurkha Regiment in Afghanistan.
Unlike other Kipling stories, this story is about the shame of an almost lost battle, not the glory of a battle won.
“The Man who was” is a quite a hilarious story of a Russian who spent time in the White Hussar Regiment in India before moving on.
