Many beautiful and touching prayers can be found in the writings of the early fathers scattered throughout the world, in the records of the lives of the Saints and in our own literature. Prayers composed in the study of a scientist, in the quiet devotion of monastery seclusion or amid the dust and heat of public affairs. Prayers are torn from the tortured soul of a confessing penitent or escaped from the happy lips of martyrs at the stake. These varied and sincere human prayers have, as the author thought, all their value, as the outpouring of faithful followers of Christ and members of His suffering or triumphant Church. Some of them the author has collected and translated in this book in the hope that they can be read and used by others, not without some benefit and interest that the author himself received from compiling the collection.
