Book description

About the Book

Because of the superficial criticism, he has received in certain quarters, the mixed-blood Indian is so widely frowned upon that Mrs. Houghton's book will be very attractive to all fair-minded scholars of our Aboriginal race. The all too widespread impression is undoubtedly based on the fact that in recent years the natural resources of some Indian reservations have attracted speculative white adventurers, many of whom, having married Indian women, have unfortunately neglected the children born of their union. ... But, as those of us who are first-hand familiar with boundary conditions know, any such strong judgment is unfair; for on all sides, we meet squamous who, though uneducated in the ordinary sense, have proven themselves of character and strength, and have dedicated their best faculties to the betterment of their families and the development of the tribes to which they belong. In the volume presented to us, Mrs. Houghton has largely confined her observations to Indians, who trace their white blood back to French sources. Its vast body of data is the fruit of a painstaking search over several years through records of ancient and modern, official and scientific, religious and literary... Continental Europe has a long standing drama tradition, including Austrian, Italian and French opera, and plays dating from the German Romanticism of the 19th century, and French Romanticism of the same period. Some examples of European drama include: Aida, La Sonnambula, Die Verkaufte Braut, Don Carlos, Elektra, La Bohème, Lakmé, Mary Stuart, "Salome", The Blue Bird, Véronique, The Flying Dutchman, A Doll's House and Der Snob.
