Book description
This book is a biography of John Leith, a renowned fur trader and Indian agent, and the translator of the Wyandotte Indians, who captured and raised him from a young age.
It is best known as "White Indian" and is recorded and published in Ohio History.
He leads his biographical story in the first person.
John Leith begins his story by describing his birth, to the exciting events of his life among the Indians of the Wyandotte tribe.
This narrative, given the age of the narrator when it was taken from his lips, and the number of years since he said goodbye to the Indian sanctuaries, is unusually accurate.
That several errors were found in his statements are indicated in the footnotes.
The spelling mistake of Leith's name is clearly traced back to his editor, as the same spelling is used when referring to the town of Leilh, Scotland - it is spelled "Leeth".
Spelling, punctuation, and capitalization of the original are strictly respected for reprints, and the original paging is shown in parentheses.
A significant addition to Leith's understanding of the events in the wilderness is the testimony given to him immediately after some of them happened.
The reprint of something that has become as rare as this brochure, to some extent, saves from oblivion a valuable contribution to American history, especially the part of it that concerns the Northwest region.
