Introductory Text-Book of Geology

Introductory Text-book of Geology - is a work which was published in 1854 and written by David Page. He was a Scottish geologist and scientific author of 19th century. Also David Page was President of the Edinburgh Geological Society. The purpose of this short treatise is to give an elementary outline of geological science. In preparing it, special attention was paid to present a simple but accurate understanding of the subject, in order to lead the student away from familiar things to less obvious facts and from knowing the facts to considering the laws by which they are governed. By adopting such a method, geology, instead of being a dry accumulation of facts, and learning it a simple task of memorization, becomes one of the most attractive areas of natural science and provides one of the best areas for exercises in observation and reflective ability. The treatise, although it is initiating, is built on a strictly scientific basis, and the author is convinced that the progress of students is best facilitated to immediately begin the technical processing of his subject and make him feel that he is gaining strength step by step and mastering the higher and more difficult conclusions. A course like this may require a bit more attention and a little more effort in the beginning, but it will prove to be more enjoyable as well as more profitable as it progresses.
