Book description
Introduction To Greek Prose Composition – is a work written by Arthur Sidgwick, British teacher and lecturer and published in 1908.
This is the thirteen edition of this book.
When writing in any language, the various difficulties to be overcome can be summarized in the three classes Accidence, Syntax and Idiom.
Accidence is the first step and needs to be learned from grammar.
These exercises may be useful in teaching the student to understand cases and inflections, but before starting to write Greek prose at all, a good knowledge of them is assumed.
Syntax is also mainly to be learned from grammar, but since grammar is intended primarily for other purposes and not to aid writing, it was deemed appropriate to give here some notes on Greek constructions, arranged so that the student can easily refer to them and finding what he is likely to find will be easier than in grammar.
Some idiom hints have also been given here to guide the student to the places where he is most likely to be mistaken, and to offer him, without going into details, some ideas regarding the main differences between the methods of expression adopted in English and Greek, respectively.
