Book description

Essentials of German Grammar – is a textbook written by John Edward Roessler, Professor of German in Valparaiso College and published in 1902. This small book has been sent out in the hope that it will be useful to many students wishing to learn German. The author believes that the study of grammar should be accompanied by reading exercises so that you can fully understand the forms of all words of the text being read. Although there are several excellent complete grammars of German for schools and colleges, they necessarily contain a lot of statements and rules, alternating with exercises, which make it extremely difficult for the student to make a good plan for all parts of speech. This book contains summaries of parts of speech, word order, case constructions, and the subjunctive mood. In fact, this textbook provides the things that every German student should master sometime at the beginning of their course. This book is not intended to replace the complete German grammar, because many details had to be omitted to keep it within the “basics”. Since the parts of speech are given in the usual order, the index was not considered necessary and was not inserted.
