About the Book
Esoteric Buddhism is a book by Alfred Percy Sinnett, a member of the Theosophical Society, first published in London in June 1883. This book is the fifth edition of this work, published in 1885. It is one of the first books written to explain Theosophy to a wider audience. This work contains fragments of the author's correspondence with the "Indian mystic". It is also the most significant theosophical work of the author and according to Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke, it "popularizes the main provisions of theosophical teaching in its new, Asian, expression." In the foreword to the first edition of the book, Sinnett writes that exoteric Buddhism "retained more unity with esoteric doctrine" than any other world religion. Thus, the presentation of "inner knowledge" addressed to the modern reader will inevitably be associated with familiar features of Buddhist teachings.
