The moral features of Christianity form an essential part of its evidence, especially for the demands of our time. A creed, a system, an institution—everything must justify its existence. No precept, however venerable, nor any authority, however sacred, can invoke liberation. The restless stream of thought washes away the layers of centuries; the convulsions of doubt and investigation laid bare the hidden principles of faith; “foundations of the round world are open”; "The foundations are shaking"; "the foundations are cast down". All of these is surely for the better in the end. Many majestic buildings, the pride of past generations, are crumbling because they were erected on quicksand, "and great is their fall." But what stands on a stone will stand unshakable, and everything else staggers and staggers. So Christianity must be ready to manifest itself. For Christianity this is simply nothing unless it is reasonable and voluntary.
