Book description
The object of the following compilation is to present a faithful summary or abstract of the Patristic evidence relative to the Titles and Prerogatives ascribed to St. Peter, and to his See and Successors, during the early ages of the Church.
The original text of the most important passages - Greek or Latin - is attached to each passage.
In the case of those cited from authors of the first five centuries, the translation generally, but not invariably, adopted is the very literal and accurate one supplied by the late Dr. Waterworth in his valuable works such as "The Fathers on St. Peter and his Successors," and "The Faith of Catholics", to which the reader may be referred for the context of many of the short passages on the following pages.
As for other and later authorities, the translations furnished by Mr. Allies in his" See of St. Peter," Archbishop Kenrick in his" Primacy of the Apostolic See Vindicated," and other English authors, have been freely adopted.
The present edition will be found to contain much additional matter, both in the text and notes; and is further enlarged by Notes on the history and Acts of the Council of Sardica and Acts of the four first General Councils, in their relation to the supremacy of the Pope.
