A Dictionary of the Proper Names of the Old and New Testament Scriptures, Being an Accurate and Literal Translation from the Original Tongues

The sole purpose of the book presented was to provide the English reader with the exact, literal equivalent of the original Hebrew, Chaldean, or Greek name. In each of the subsequent cases, the author compared his translation with the translation given by the onomastographers mentioned in the work, and in those cases where his text differed from theirs, he gave a satisfactory reason for the difference. In addition, the author carefully noted each meaning in relation to its context, since the passage in which the name occurs often sheds light on the particular shade of meaning that is attached to it.
