The author of this dictionary was James Hinton Knowles, a British missionary to Kashmir in the 19th century.
He visited Kashmir in the 1880s and wrote two important books on the Kashmiri language and culture.
The Dictionary of Kashmiri Proverbs and Sayings is a comprehensive collection of Kashmiri proverbs and sayings. This dictionary was published in 1885 in Bombay, British India.
The author spent two long, quiet winters in Kashmir, and the result of many hours of labor, study, and effort is this Dictionary of Kashmiri Proverbs and Sayings.
As regards the "point" of various proverbs and sayings, the author went through them all, with a little advice from learned Muhamraadan and Hindu Kashmiri friends, and did not allow any to pass until he had a full understanding of them.
