Book description

A Catalogue of Irregular Greek Verbs – is a book, which was published in 1837 and written by Philipp Buttmann, a German philologist of French Huguenot ancestry. His work gave a great impetus to the scientific study of the Greek language. In this Catalog, Buttman allegedly has two aims: first, to list all the primitive verbs, regular or irregular, which are in common use, especially in prose, naming in each actual use the best writers; second, to give a list of all verbs and all verb forms that are abnormal or irregular. So long as there is a form in any authentic remnants of ancient Greek literature that is not classified or explained in this Catalogue, it will not reach the fullness that should be its goal. On the other hand, any incidental information that can be gleaned from dialects not used by any of the existing writers is on the agenda of this work for nothing more than to clarify the relationship between forms and dialects. However, an attempt to make this Catalog etymologically complete may in some particular cases lead to confusion; as, for example, when certain verbs derived from the same stem or root with different but related meanings are placed together as belonging to the same verb. In such cases, it is more of a grammar area to separate what the usage has already separated.
