William Strang
William Strang (13 February 1859 to 12 April 1921) was a Scottish painter printmaker, and notable illustrating works by Bunyan, Coleridge and Kipling. Born at Dumbarton, he was the son of Peter Strang, builder, and was educated at Dumbarton Academy. For 15 months he worked in the counting-house at a shipbuilder, and at 16 went to London where for 6 years he studied art with Alphonse Legros at the Slade School. William became the assistant master in the etching class, and enjoyed great success as an etcher. One of the original members of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, his work featured in their first exhibition in 1881, while some of his early plates were reproduced in The Portfolio and in many other art magazines.
