William D. Whitney
William Dwight Whitney (1827 to 1894) was a celebrated US linguist, philologist, and lexicographer known for his work on Sanskrit grammar and Vedic philology and his influential views on language as a social institution. Whitney was the founding president of the American Philological Association, and also the editor-in-chief of The Century Dictionary.
