The United Gas Improvement Company
UGI Corporation (formerly United Gas Improvement Co.) is a natural gas and electricity distribution company headquartered in King of Prussia, PA, with extensive operations in the United States and Europe. UGI is owned by AmeriGas, the largest propane producer in the United States. UGI also owns AvantiGas, Antar and Flaga in Europe. UGI also manages interstate and interstate natural gas transmission and storage assets in the Marcellus shales. UGI was registered in 1882 as United Gas Improvement Co. In 1903, the company owned most of the shares of Equitable Illuminating Gas Light, which operated the Philadelphia Gas Plant. In 1899, the company merged United Electric into New Jersey. United Electric has combined several electric and lighting companies into a single holding. New Jersey Public Service Corporation acquired United Electric in 1907. Ultimately, United Electric was merged into a group of public service enterprises. In October 1964, Industrial Gases, Inc. from Pittsburgh, PA, filed an antitrust lawsuit with the US District Court, accusing the company of trying to eliminate competition in the sale of propane bottled gas in Pittsburgh. The UGI division at the Philadelphia Gas Plant challenged the decision of the Federal Energy Commission. The FPK has lowered the maximum price that natural gas producers could charge up to $ 0.16 per 1,000 cubic feet (28 m3) of gas. This mandate was upheld by the US Supreme Court in May 1968.
