Richard Caulfield


Richard Caulfield (1823-1887) was the secretary, librarian and curator of the Royal Cork Institute, as well as the librarian of King's College Cork. Caulfield was born in Cork on April 23, 1823, the grandson of Henry Gosnell, a doctor at the Reclining Hospital and the first resident surgeon in the Cork North Infirmary. One of six children born to Catherine Gosnell and William Caulfield, he was named Richard, last name. Caulfield was educated by Dr. Brown at the im. Bandon and was retired at Trinity College Dublin in 1841. There he was influenced by lectures on the ancient philosophy of William Archer Butler. Graduated B.A. in 1845, bachelor of law in 1864 and doctor of law in 1866. The Society of Antiquaries elected Caulfield a scholarship holder on February 13, 1862, and he became librarian at the Royal Cork Institute in 1864. He was appointed in 1876 as the librarian of King’s College in Cork, and in 1882 he became an honorary member of the Royal Academy of History in Madrid. He was also a member of the Society of Antiquaries of Normandy and a member of the committee for the restoration of Cork Cathedral.
