Petronius Arbiter

Petronius Arbiter

Guy Petronius Arbiter (c. 27 - 66) was a Roman court during the reign of Nero. It is generally believed that he is the author of a Satyricon, a satirical novel that is believed to have been written in the era of Nero (AD 54-68). Tacitus, Plutarch and Pliny the Elder describe Petronius as the Elegan arbiter (also called the elegant arm arbiter), the "judge of elegance" at the court of Emperor Nero. He served as consul in the year 62. He later became a member of the senatorial class, who devoted himself to a life of pleasure. His relationship with Nero seemed to be similar to that of a fashion consultant.
