Peter Redpath
Peter Redpath (1821 to 1894) was a Canadian businessman and philanthropist whose name is closely associated with Redpath Sugar. He was born in Montreal into a family of Scottish immigrant John Redpath, who was director of the Bank of Montreal and also a member of the Montreal City Council. Peter Redpath began his career in the family's sugar refinery and other businesses in Montreal, and became a member of the McGill University Board of Governors from 1864 up to his death in 1894. In 1871 he endowed a chair of Natural Philosophy at McGill in 1871 and in 1880 established the Redpath Museum. In the same year, he migrated to England. He also founded the Redpath Library at the University in 1893.
