Léon Gauthier


Leon Marie Felix Gautier, who was born in Setif in French Algeria on January 18, 1862, died on March 11, 1949 in Birmandra, near Algeria1, a French Arabic translator, specialist in Averroes and Ibn Tufail. He was a professor of history of Muslim philosophy at the Department of Literature at the University of Algeria. His father is a judge in the Setif Civil Court. Leon Gauthier attended Algeria's high school as an internal student. There he met photographer Jules Gervais-Courtelmont, who would remain his friend. Having received a bachelor's degree in science and literature (1879-1881), he studied philosophy at the Higher School of Arts with a scholarship. He attended the courses of philosophy of Jules-Emil Alo (sv), a student of Victor Cousin, courses of archeology and history of Rene de la Blancher, Emil Musker and Edward Cote. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Lyon in November 1883, then received a scholarship to combine philosophy at the Faculty of Literature in Paris, where he attended the lessons of Paul Janet (1884-1886).
