Laurence Hutton


Laurence Hutton (1843 to 1904) was an American critic and essayist who was born in NYC and educated privately. A frequent traveler, for 20 years spent summer abroad. He contributed to periodicals form 1870, being drama critic of the New York Evening Mail (1872 to 1874), and literary editor of Harper's Magazine (1886 to 1898). An organizer of the Authors' Club and the International Copyright League, and was also had memberships at the Players' Club, the Princeton Club, and Nassau Club. He built a rdemarkable collection of literary curiosities. In 1892 he graduatetd with an A.M. from Yale University and in 1897 an honorary Master of Arts degree from Princeton. He was a lecturer in English at Princeton from 1901 up to his death in 1904.
