John C. Duval
John Crittenden Duvall (1816-1897) was an American writer of Texas literature. He was noted as the first Texas writer and was named the “Father of Texas Literature” by J. Frank Dobie. His "Early Times in Texas" was first published in 1867 in Burke's Weekend (Macon, GA) and finally published as a book in 1892. The Texas classic story tells of Duval's escape from the Goliad massacre, in which his own brother, Burr H. Duval, was killed, like other tales. Another brother, Thomas Howard Duval, was an outstanding judge from Texas. The father of the man, William Papa Duval, has long been the governor of Florida.
