James Bryce


James Bryce, 1st Viscount Bryce,  (1838 to 1922) was a UK academic, and jurist, as well as a historian and Liberal politician. Strongly intellectual and politically energetic, he became a valuable member of the Liberal Party. From the late 1860s, he was Chairman of the Royal Commission on Secondary Education and was appointed Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in the Gladstone Government. In 1892, he joined Gladstone's last cabinet as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. In 1894 he was appointed President of the Board of Trade in Lord Rosebery's new cabinet.
