J. A. R. Marriott

Sir John Arthur Ransom Marriott (August 17, 1859 - June 6, 1945) was a British educator, historian, and conservative Member of Parliament (MP). He taught modern history at Oxford University from 1884 to 1920. He was an Honorary Researcher, a former teacher and professor of modern history at Worcester College in Oxford. He was a conservative deputy from Oxford from 1917 to 1922 and from York from 1923 to 1929. After the defeat in 1929, he resigned from active politics. During his life, he has written more than forty books on British and European history, as well as on current political topics. He was knighted in 1924. Marriott was born in Boudon, Cheshire, in a family of a small landowner lawyer. He was educated at Repton School and New College in Oxford, graduating in 1882 with a second in modern history. As a student, he was an active member of the Canning Club, a conservative society.
