Henry Phillpotts

Henry Phillpotts

Heinrich Philpotts (May 6, 1778 - September 18, 1869), often referred to as the "Henry of Exeter," was the Anglican bishop of Exeter from 1830 to 1869. One of England's longest ministers since the 14th century, Philpotts was a vibrant figure of the 19th century church. Henry Philpotts, Bishop of Exeter, was born May 6, 1778 in Bridgewater, Somerset, England, into the family of John Philpott, factory owner, innkeeper, auctioneer and land agent Dean and head of Gloucester Cathedral. He grew up in Gloucestershire and was educated at Gloucester Cathedral School. John Phillpotts, a member of parliament from the city of Gloucester between 1830 and 1847, was his older brother. The other two brothers, Thomas and George, and two sisters, Isabella and Sibella, came of age; several other brothers and sisters died in infancy or childhood.
