H. B. Swete


Henry Barclay Sweet, (March 14, 1835 in Bristol - May 10, 1917 in Hitchin) was an English biblical scholar. He became a professor of theology in 1890 at Cambridge. He is known for his 1906 commentary on the Book of Revelation and other interpretations. Sweet was educated at King's College in London, in Gonville and Gaius College in Cambridge, and in 1858 he was ordained. After several years of work in different countries of the world and his life, in 1869 he became a theological lecturer and tutor at Caius College. In 1881, he became the examining chaplain to the Bishop of St. Albans, and the following year he was appointed professor of pastoral theology at King's College London. In 1890, he replaced Brooke Foss Westcott as a professor at Cambridge and remained in that post until 1915, when he retired with the title of Professor Emeritus. In June 1901, he received an honorary doctorate in theology from the University of Glasgow. The following year he was appointed preacher to Lady Margaret. In 1911, he was appointed honorary chaplain of King George V.
