Grolier Club
The Grolier Club is a private club and bibliophile society situated in New York. It was founded in 1884, and is the oldest bibliophile club in North America in continuous operation. The club is named for Jean Grolier de Servier, Viscount d'Agouzi, who was the Treasurer of France, and was a prominnet bibliophile whose motto was "Io. Grolierii et amicorum ”(owned by Jean Grolier and his friends or owned by him) which implied generosity in the exchange of books. The Club's goal is to "literary study of art related to the production of books, including the periodical publication of books designed to illustrate, promote and promote these arts, as well as the acquisition, equipping and maintenance of a suitable club building for safekeeping." The Club has a research library that specializes in books, printing (especially print history and small print examples), bibliography and bibliophilia, bookbinding, illustrations and selling of books, and has one of the biggest collections of book auctions and bookseller catalogs Northern America. It contains the archives of several prominent bibliophiles, including Sir Thomas Phillips, and of print collectors like the Grosvita Women Collectors Club (1944 to 1999) and the Iconophile Society.
