George Combe

George Comb (October 21, 1788 - August 14, 1858) was a Scottish lawyer, leader and representative of the phrenological movement for over 20 years. He founded the Edinburgh Phrenological Society in 1820 and wrote an influential study, The Constitution of Man (1828). Comb studied law in Scottish law and had a practice in Edinburgh. After his marriage in 1833, Comb devoted himself in the following years to the promotion of phrenology at the international level. George Comb was born in Edinburgh, the son of George Comb, a prosperous brewer in the city and older brother Andrew Comb. After attending Edinburgh High School and the University of Edinburgh, Comb entered the lawyer's office in 1804; and in 1812 he began his own practice. The Combs family lived together in a large house on Northumberland Street 25 in New Town, at least until 1833.
