Darwell Stone

Darwell Stone

Darwell Stone (1859 to 1941) was both a Church of England priest and an Anglo-Catholic theologian. Born at Rossett, Denbighshire, Stone received his education at Merton College, Oxford, was made a deacon in 1883, and after being ordained as a priest in 1885 became the vice-principal and in 1888 principal of Dorchester Missionary College, Oxfordshire. Then between 1909 to 1934 he held the position of principal of Pusey House, Oxford. He strongly maintained High Church principles and defended the theology of R. W. Church and H. P. Liddon against the teachings of the Lux Mundi school. In later life he assumed leadership of the Anglo-Catholic Movement in the Church of England and strongly opposed the project to revise the Book of Common Prayer. His writings contained broad and accurate learnings and he expressed fairness to his opponents. From 1915 until his death he edited the Lexicon of Patristic Greek.
