He was a professor of mathematics at Erasmus Smith at Trinity College Dublin (1843-1862) and was president of the Royal Irish Academy (1861-1866). He served as dean of the Royal Chapel in Dublin Castle, and then as Bishop of Limerick, Ardferth and Agado. He was the brother of both John Graves, a lawyer and mathematician, and Robert Perceval Graves, a writer and clergyman. Born on 12 Fitzwilliam Square in Dublin, the son of John Crosby Graves (1776–1835), the chief magistrate of the Dublin police, from his wife Elena Perceval, daughter and co-founder of the Rev. Charles Perceval (1751–1795) Bruenny County Cork. Helena enjoyed the patronage of John Freeman-Mitford, the first Baron Redesdale, who married her cousin, daughter of John Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont. Educated at Trinity College Dublin, he was elected a scholar in the field of classics, and in 1834 received a bachelor's degree as a senior moderator in mathematics, receiving a master's degree in 1838. He played cricket for Trinity, and then in his life rode a lot in boats and fished. It was assumed that he would enter the 18th (Royal Irish) regiment under the leadership of his uncle, Major General James William Graves (1774–1845), and in the process of preparation he became an experienced fencer and horseman.
