Charles C. Soule


Charles Carroll Soule (June 25, 1842 to January 7, 1913) was an American literary enthusiast with an interest in the architecture of libraries. Boston born, he attended the Boston Latin School and Harvard College, and fought in the Civil War in the 44th and 55th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantries. When the war ended he spoke publicly on post-slavery reconciliation in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. In the 1870s he worked in St. Louis in the publishing firm of Soule, Thomas & Winsor, and during the 1880s sold law books from offices in Pemberton Square, Boston. In 1886 he opened a bookshop in a former church and in 1889 established the Boston Book Company, and The Green Bag, a legal news magazine whose editor was Horace Williams Fuller. He was a member of the American Library Association.
